Does it really need DXT5 compression?  I can't imagine most artwork has any gradient transparency in it, and DXT1 is half the size of DXT5, using identical compression but without the extra bit for alpha channel.  For something so small it's probably not a huge difference, but it does add up. Sorry, I'm not really used to Gimp and .DDS. When I flatten the image, the background all around the painting becomes white. Then, when I try the .package in-game, everything works fine, except the frame is white and I can't modify it with the textures. How can I avoid it? (Thanks in advance)
