[edit] Step 1: Backup .world
- Do a backup! Please do a backup before continuing with the rest of this guide. Go to the path provided in World file Locations for the location of the .world file.
- Select the .world file and Copy
- In any empty spot, right-click and Paste.
- Rename this file to have another extension so you won't get duplicates in the New Game screen. I usually put ".orig" as the extension for my backups, and remove the "- Copy" portions.
- This <town-name> - Copy.world.orig (or <town-name>.world.orig) is your backup file. Keep it safe! This is the file to restore when you need to update or need to do over.
- Repeat the above steps for each .world you want to edit.
[edit] Step 2: Before you begin
- Next, backup your Save games. Go to /Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/, and backup the Saves folder by either
- Copy+Paste so you have a copy of this folder and its contents to Desktop (or in another drive, preferably)
- Archive it in a zip or rar file.
- You can also do a full backup of the whole user folder if you like, see this Backup Guide.
- Backing up the Saves or the whole user folder would mean you have some previous state to rollback to if you messed on the Import or the Porterizing portion.
- Prepare the Porter! Porterize your favorite Households before you do the steps below, if you want to transplant your Households into a NEW game, because these fixes won't appear in pre-existing Saves if you have patched to 1.42 and higher (read the FAQs). You should have gotten any tools required for this article from the Pre-requisites page.
- Please be sure to read up on how to use the Porter mod from Twallan's site, and in particular the FAQ page for it. The usage of this mod is out of scope of this article.
[edit] Step 3: Get the fixed resources
- Download the Resources for the world that you want to fix from The Downloads section, and extract it.
- Be sure you have the correct resources for the correct world! If Windows Explorer don't show same number of files as stated in the download thread, logout from MTS, remove cookies and browser caches and try re-downloading after you have re-logged-in.
- Extract the contents to a temporary folder on your Desktop, or where-ever you can find it again, easily.
[edit] Step 4: Prep the world file
This step only applies to Installed worlds from the EA Store
- In the User Documents path, do a backup of your The Sims 3 folder, if you have skipped Step 2: Before you begin above.
- Download and extract the Recompressor from MATY. Copy and paste the s3rc.exe into the InstalledWorlds folder. This path is documented in World file Locations
- Recompressorize the .world file. If you don't know what that means, download and double-click the run.bat file. You should have gotten any tools required for this article from the Pre-requisites page.
[edit] Step 5: Import the resources with s3pe
- In S3PE: Open S3PE as Administrator. You should have gotten any tools required for this article from the Pre-requisites page.
- Now go to the path for the game whose world you want to fix. The paths are documented in World file Locations
- <worldname.world> backup already done? OK, warning delivered, Ready?
- Open the appropriate world file that you downloaded the "<worldname's fixes>.zip" for in S3PE.
- From the Resource menu -> Import -> From file, navigate to the location where you have the "<worldname's fixes>.zip" extracted.
- Select all (Ctrl+A) the extracted files and click Import.
- Ensure the dropdown for the filetypes show all *.* as we want to import everything.
- Save the file and exit. Remember to simply do a Save, not a Save As.
- Remove caches and test the game.
[edit] Step 6: Preparing for a patch or restoring the original
When the next patch is released, you simply rename the extensions.
- Rename the fixed <Town>.world to "<Town>.world.fixed"
- Rename the original back by removing the ".orig" so the file name is restored back to "<Town>.world", and you're good to go.
- Then patch or install the add-on.
- If you don't want the fixed version anymore, simply delete it from your system.
- If you do want the fixed version back, just rename the pair of them back to "<Town>.world.orig" and the "<Town>.world.fixed" to "<Town>.world", respectively.
- Check back on the Download threads that no changes is required though. I doubt EA would suddenly redo the Worlds when they have not done so in the past, but you never know. "Never say never" as the saying goes.
