The Sims 3 Custom Content Basics

This guide explains the basics of downloading and installing custom content for The Sims 4. It is not a full guide to every little detail, but a general overview to help you get started. It will also link you to other pages with more information, where needed.

Summary

  1. Place in Mods Folder: Cut and paste the .package file(s) into your Mods folder:
  • Windows XP: Documents and Settings\(Current User Account)\My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods\
  • Windows Vista/7/8/8.1: Users\(Current User Account)\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods\
  • Mac: Users\(Current User Account)\Documents\\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods\

Detailed Instructions

You unfortunately still not know exactly how to proceed? Then go over there:

Modifications are located in Package Files

In general, most modifications in The Sims 4 will be delivered as so-called package-file. This has usually a ".package"- extension and is often packed with a compression tool. Therefore, the downloads have often he ZIP or RAR format. While you can open ZIP-Files without problems with the built-in Zip-Extractor of Windows 7/8/8.1, you have to download additional software for RAR-Files. 7-Zip is one of these extractor tools and is very easy to use.

You can download and install it from there: www.7-zip.org

Extracting ZIP/RAR-Files

Once you've downloaded the compressed modification, you have to extract the containing package-files. Todo this simply use the right click menu.

Perform a right click on the compressed file, goto "7-Zip" and select "Extract Here". That's it, you have now the package-file.

Installing Package-Files

Copy your extracted package-file with CTRL+C and paste into the following path:

  • Windows XP: Documents and Settings\(Current User Account)\My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods\
  • Windows Vista/7/8/8.1: Users\(Current User Account)\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods\
  • Mac: Users\(Current User Account)\Documents\\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods\

How to Create subfolders in your MOD (downloads) folder

Playing The Sims 4

If you have completed all these steps, you can now start the game.

Now a popup window will appear with all loaded modifications, categorized by NON-SCRIPT-MODS and SCRIPT-MODS. If you don't want to see this window again, you just need to uncheck "View at game start".

To activate Script-Mods, you have to check "Script-Mods:" in the game options.

That's it. Have fun with your modified Sims 4.
